CHIEF AIYEDUN, SUNDAY VINCENT
An astute public servant and community builder
Chief Sunday Vincent Aiyedun was born on the 18th day of September, 1950 in Ogori, Ogori-Mangongo Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria, to the popular Aiyedun’s family in Ogori community.
He attended Government Secondary School, Okene (now Abdul Aziz Attah Memorial College) between 1963 and 1967 and came out with brilliant result, Division One. At the same school, he enrolled for his Higher School Certificate (HSC) and completed it in 1969. In 1970, young Vincent gained admission to the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria where he studied and became a Bachelor Degree holder in Economics in 1973.
With his academic outstanding at the University, Chief Aiyedun in 1974 got employed in the Federal Ministry of Finance and he served as collector of customs. That same year, 1974, young but energetic Vincent transferred his job to Kwara State Ministry of Finance and served as Administrative Officer till 1978. In 1979 down to 1982, Chief Aiyedun served as Principal Clerk Assistant in the Kwara State House of Assembly and from 1982 to 1983 he held the position of the Deputy Clerk to the same House of Assembly.
Chief Aiyedun had steady rise in his work career, in 1984, he became Under Secretary, Finance, Governor’s Office, Kwara State. He was Chief of Protocol, Governor’s Office, Ilorin, a position he held for three years. In 1988, he was posted to Kwara State Liaison Office Kaduna as Secretary.
This rare gem equally served as Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Social Development, Youth and Sports Kwara State. He also worked as Deputy Director, Political Affairs, Governor’s Office, Kwara State between 1989-1990.
In preparation for the return of Nigeria to civil rule by the then military government of President Ibrahim Babangida in 1990, Chief Aiyedun was appointed as the Administrative Secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for Yagba Local Government Area. His last office duty in Kwara State was at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in 1991 where he served as a Director of Finance and Management.
With the creation of Kogi State in 1991 and his deployment to the new State, Chief Aiyedun was posted to the Kogi State Ministry of Finance, Commerce and Industry as Director of Personnel Management. In 1993, he was the Director Personnel Management in Governor’s Office, Lokoja. He was appointed as the Sole Administrator, Kogi State Teaching Service in the later part of 1993. Between 1994 and 1995, he was appointed as the Director-General Government House, Lokoja and later got posted to Establishment, Pension and Training as its Director-General, a position he held before he voluntarily retired from civil service work on the 9th of November, 1996.
His past success story as an astute civil servant earned him the position of Chairman, Kogi State Civil Service Commission where he served meritoriously between 1999 and 2003.
Chief Sunday Vincent Aiyedun attended several courses within and outside Nigeria which aided him to perform effectively well while in the civil service. He was at the University of Lagos in 1975 to attend a course on organization and method; Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON) Topo in 1976, University of Ibadan in 1978 and at Legis 50, Denver, Colorado U.S.A in 1980. He equally attended several seminars and conferences. On several occasions too, he presented thought provoking papers to civil servants, academicians and public organizations.
He has been steadily involved in consultancy project for the United Nations Development Projects (UNDP) in Kogi State especially in the area of Informal, Small and Medium Scale industries.
Chief Aiyedun is a member to so many professional and religious bodies across the country such as Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Administration (FICA); Fellow of the Institute of Sales Management (FISM) and Fellow of the Institute of Industrialists and Corporate Administrators (FIICA); member Kogi Elders Forum among others.
He has so far been endowed with performances and has won several awards and commendations from institutions, communities, religious and professional organizations such as Merit Award Winner, Middle-belt Youth Forum, Merit Award (1994) from Ogori Community; Gold Award for Youth Development, International Youth Congress, Belgium, 2011; Certificate of Merit from Ogori Descendants Union 2010; Political Activist and Peace Mediator for Ogori L.G.A.
Since his retirement from service, Chief Aiyedun has been involved in community projects especially in Ogori where he has helped to see to the execution of community driven projects, he has been a strong pillar for the reduction of poverty in Ogori, he has been a source of comfort to the indigent students, artisans and the widows. Several people within and outside Ogori had benefitted from his kindness especially in the area of employment during his days in public service.
This great achiever has special interest in reading, writing, music, sports and philanthropic activities. He is happily married and blessed by God with good children.
