A law to provide for the legal and institution framework for participation of Kogi state in the power sector in the Areas of Electricity Generation, Transmission, System Operation, Distribution, Supply, Enforcement of Consumer’s Right and Obligation and Inauguration of Renewable Energy to Kogi state Energy mix and for the attraction of investment has passed through second reading on the floor of the house during plenary.
Leading the debate, the sponsor of the bill and member representing Ogori Magongo state constituency, Bode Ogunmola explained that owing to the fifth alteration of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic Nigeria which removed power from the exclusive legislative list to the concurrent list said the bill was geared towards institutionalizing a framework for Kogi state to participate in the power sector for its socio-economic development
He said the bill when passed into law would provide for a regulatory body that would be established to ensure efficient and uninterrupted electricity supply to the state as well as a power scheme that would ensure power supply to the all nooks and crannies.
Contributing to the debate the members representing Omala state constituency, Umar Yahaya and his counterpart from Dekina Biraidu State Constituency Ochidi Usman Shehu said the bill when passed into law would boost the state revenue as it would provide enabling environment for the private sector investment in the energy sector of the state.
