KWASU set to graduate 6,620 students

Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, is graduating a total number of 6,620 students for the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 academic sessions at the 8th and 9th Convocation ceremonies of the institution. Of this number, 96 students made First Class.
In addition, the institution would be graduating 321 students for higher degrees in the 2019/2020 session, and 96 students in the 2020/2021 session.
This was disclosed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Muhammed Mustapha Akanbi (SAN), on Monday at the pre-convocation press briefing of the institution.
Stating that management has in the past 20 months stabilised the university and built on the available structures and infrastructure in the university in spite of funding constraints, the VC disclosed that “the tradition of stable academic calendar has been sustained and this has ensured that we turn out graduates on schedule.”
Akanbi, who stated that the university has continued to achieve significant .milestones, was elated that the young institution recently inducted the first and second batches of Medical Laboratory Scientists “who graduated from KWASU’s B. MLS in 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 academic sessions respectively, adding that ” this is a significant achievement because KWASU is the first tertiary institution in the whole of the North Central District to mount the B. MLS programme, turning out 67 Medical Laboratory Scientists.”
He added that KWASU is setting the pace in aircraft engineering in the country, with two students of the institution designing and constructing a light aircraft, saying “the one-sitter turbo propeller engine aircraft is set to attain an altitude of 13,000 feet at 220 km/h speed and the light aircraft which is the first of its kind in the University will soon be ready for a test flight.”
Despite the achievements recorded by the university over the years, the vice Chancellor said funding remains a major challenge, saying “funding of our activities is still throughinternally generated revenue. He, however, added that they have refrained from borrowing, while also trying to offset inherited debts which accrued from payment of salaries and other operating costs.
Another challenge, he said, is encroachment on the land ceded to the university, urging the state government to urgently erect perimeter fencing round the land ceded to the institution.
