As part of their Community Development Service Project, earlier today, at the Ganaja Village part of Lokoja, In order to avert flooding, the National Youth’s Service Corps of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Group in collaboration with National Orientation Agency, (NOA), FRSC, Fire Service, Editorial and other sister’s CDS group have taken to the street of Ganaja to sensitize the public on the need to take proactive measures to avoid flooding.

The youth corps member’s ‎who were volunteers under the Emergency Management moved through the major streets of Ganaja Primary School and market, distributing flyers calling on the people to desist from dumping refuse in the waterways.

In his address, the president of the group Corper Ogede Bashir O. said it is necessary to make the traders know the need to prepare and protect the environment so as to avoid loss of life and property.

‎On how to maintain most drainages and water ways across Lokoja, the secretary of the NEMA CDS Group , Ihenyi Chiamaka Blessing while speaking with the newsmen said government would continue to dredge the waterways to allow free flow of water to avoid flooding.

The regular sight of most of the waterways and drainage in major parts of Ganaja, are not looking good as heap of refuse block the water from flowing.

The need to address this trend to avoid the adverse effects it poses particularly when the rains come, brought the youth corps members to serve under the emergency.

The Kogi State Government had in 2011 embarked on massive dredging of drainages and waterways after a major flood disaster swept off homes and lives were lost, but from the look of the waterways and drainages now, there is need to work on them once again to avoid a repeat of such occurrence.
