Workers in Kwara State on Monday joined their counterparts across the country to observe the sit-at-home strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its Trade Union Congress (TUC) to press home their demands for a living wage and reversal of hike in electricity tariff.
When our correspondent went
round the capital city of Ilorin and its environs, it was discovered that government offices, schools, banks and Courts, among others, were under lock and key.
Fielding questions from newsmen shortly after the inspection visits on the level of compliance, the State NLC Chairman, Comrade Murtala Olayinka, expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance, adding that the situation on ground and the positive response of workers to the directive showed that the people are tired .
Comrade Olayinka explained that the union would continue to go round to ensure full mobilisation of workers, saying the union adopted the sit-at-home strategy to prevent possible hijack of the strike by hoodlums.
He urged government to urgently do the needful to save workers from unnecessary suffering.
In his remarks, the State Chairman of the TUC, Comrade Abdulrahman Onikijipa, said the two unions would join hands to ensure success of the Strike.
He said the labour unions chose the stay at home option to make the strike liberal.
