Kogi BEBM Exhibitions proudly announce the winners of the 2024 Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu Essay Competition
. Firdaus Sanusi of the College of Science and Technology, Osara, emerged victorious with his essay on the Revitalization of Ajaokuta Steel Complex in Kogi State.
The competition, organized by Mr. Bayode Oladipo, the Convener of BEBM, took place at the NUJ Press Centre in Lokoja. Among numerous entries from various higher institutions in Kogi State, three students from CUSTHEC, Osara, and Federal Polytechnic, Idah, claimed the top three positions.
Firdaus Sanusi of CUSTHEC, Osara, secured the first-place position, followed by Godwin Philemina Ojochenemi of Federal Polytechnic, Idah, in second place, and Idoko Peace Enyo, also from Federal Polytechnic, Idah, in third place.
The Assessment Committee, led by Dr. Joel Temitope, praised the winners for their thoughtful analysis of the topics. Their exceptional command of the English language and meticulous nature showcased their significant potential. Congratulations were extended to all finalists, with best wishes for their future endeavors.
The Honorable Minister of Steel, Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, represented by the Chairman of the Shuaibu Abubakar Audu Foundation, Emmanuel Ekele, expressed gratitude to the organizers and commended the winners of the essay competition.
A lecture on the Revitalization of Ajaokuta Steel Complex was delivered by Comrade Ibrahim Obansa, the Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

It is both an honor and a privilege for me to stand before you today to speak on a topic of great national importance, a topic that speaks to the need to urgently Revamp Ajaokuta Steel Company and its attendant benefits. Though the story of Ajaokuta Steel Company is one that mirrors the rise and fall of great potential, it also presents a vista of hope, and the prospect of renewal. Conceived in 1979 and envisioned as an integrated steel complex, the project which was intended to drive Nigeria’s industrialization effort with a targeted production capacity of up to 3 million metric tons of steel annually. At its peak in 1994, the steel plant had attained about 98% completion, providing employment opportunities for thousands of Nigerians, especially indigenes of Kogi State, where it is situated. The project became not only a symbol of Nigeria’s industrial ambition, but also a key player in shaping Nigeria’s economic landscape. The local economy of the State, which was hitherto a civil service state became vibrant, with bustling businesses, inspired by the operational activities of the company, springing up to serve the needs of the workers and their families. The direct impact of this was that crime rates dropped significantly as many young people found gainful employment within the steel plant and its ancillary industries. These benefits were clear evidence of the transformative power of industrialization.
At the national level, the operational success of Ajaokuta Steel Company meant self-reliance in steel production; a critical input for infrastructure development, manufacturing, and technological advancement which Nigeria needed to join the league of world producing economies. The elimination of steel imports saved Nigeria significant foreign exchange, boosting our trade balance and enhancing the value of the naira. Local industries thrived on readily available raw materials, contributing to job creation and skill development.
Unfortunately, political instability, financial constraint, management challenges, and what I will like to describe as international conspiracy combined to kill the visionary project. Despite huge investments exceeding 80 billion Dollars by successive governments. And the continued funding and exploration of international partnerships towards realizing the plants potentials, the steel plant has yet to produce steel till date. The project has remained a symbol of unrealized industrial ambition.
The Potential Benefits of Reviving Ajaokuta Steel Company
At this juncture, I will like to speak to the need for government to work assiduously towards reviving this company, and the far-reaching impacts that it would have for both Nigeria and the host State of Kogi, especially at this time in Nigeria’s history when government is battling with a meltdown in the economy, exacerbated by inflation and other economic indices.
1. Economic Empowerment and Job Creation: A revitalized Ajaokuta Steel Company would directly employ thousands of workers and indirectly support millions through its supply chains. From engineers to welders, truck drivers to factory workers, this company could become a cornerstone of our fight against unemployment.
2. Boost to National Infrastructure: Steel is the backbone of infrastructure development anywhere in the world. With Ajaokuta back in operation, Nigeria could domesticate the production of materials needed for constructing roads, bridges, railways, housing, and energy facilities. This would accelerate the pace of national development.
3. Industrialization and Technology Transfer: The resuscitation of Ajaokuta Steel Company would act as a catalyst for the growth of ancillary industries such as automobile manufacturing, shipbuilding, and heavy machinery production. Partnerships with global experts could also lead to technology transfer, enhancing Nigeria’s industrial capacity.
4. Enhanced Revenue and Forex Savings: Nigeria would save billions of dollars annually by reducing steel imports. Additionally, Ajaokuta has the potential to become a net exporter of steel products, earning foreign exchange and improving our trade surplus.
5. Improved Standard of Living in Host Communities: For Kogi State, the economic ripple effect of a thriving steel company cannot be overstated. It would lead to better infrastructure, improved public services, and an uplifted standard of living for its people. With increased economic activities, local businesses, which include hotels, schools, and healthcare facilities would also flourish.
6. Strengthening National Security: Steel production is critical to national defense. A functional Ajaokuta Steel Company would supply materials for manufacturing equipment needed to safeguard our nation.
7. Environmental Sustainability: Modern steel production techniques are far more environmentally friendly than they were decades ago. With appropriate investment, Ajaokuta could serve as a model for sustainable industrialization, contributing to Nigeria’s climate action goals.
The Need for Commitment and Collaboration
Ladies and gentlemen, while the benefits of revamping Ajaokuta Steel Company are clear, achieving this vision requires collective commitment. The challenges that led to its decline, including poor management and allegations of international conspiracy, must be addressed decisively. Transparency, accountability, and the right partnerships are essential to restoring this industrial giant. I appeal to the Honorable Minister and other stakeholders here today to prioritize the revival of Ajaokuta Steel Company. It is not merely about restoring a factory; it is about reigniting the hope of millions, securing Nigeria’s economic future, and reclaiming our place as a global industrial player.
