A non-governmental organisation, Akoni Care Foundation, has awarded scholarships to 30 boys of the Universal Basic Education Secondary School, Gadumo, in Kogi State.
The foundation who gave 500 free books to Students also donated 300 menstrual pads to female students, encouraging them to uphold proper personal hygiene as part of efforts to support adolescent girls.
Addressing the students, the Executive Director of the Foundation, Deborah Agbonika, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to promoting the welfare and development of both boys and girls.
According to her, empowering young people remains central to building a healthier and more productive society.
“Akoni Care Foundation will continue to empower both the girl-child and the boy-child so that together they can contribute to the nation of our dreams,” Agbonika said.
“This scholarship programme is designed to encourage the boys to stay focused on their education because education remains the best legacy they can secure for their future.”
Speaking further, she urged the girls to make proper use of the sanitary pads provided.
“We expect our girls to manage their menstrual health carefully. Good hygiene keeps them healthy and prevents unnecessary absenteeism from school. Menstruation should never be a barrier to their education,” she added.
Earlier, a facilitator, Oyiza Bello, educated the girls on the importance of maintaining good menstrual hygiene and developing self-confidence.
“You are beautiful, smart and the leaders of tomorrow,” Bello told the students. “When you are on your period, ensure you change your pads every six hours. Bathe at least twice daily, and avoid using soap inside the vagina to prevent infections—only wash the outer part of your body.”
The Principal of the school, Mrs. Christiana Basagi, expressed deep appreciation to the Foundation for what she described as a timely and impactful gesture.
“This initiative will go a long way in reducing the financial burden on parents and improving the wellbeing of our students,” she said. “We are grateful to Akoni Care Foundation for remembering our children.”
