The Kogi State Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Olufemi Bolarin, has unveiled ambitious plans aimed at transforming the livestock sector and boosting economic growth in the state.
Dr. Bolarin made this known while defending the Ministry’s 2026 proposed budget before the House Committee on Livestock Development at the Kogi State House of Assembly.
According to the Commissioner, key projects lined up by the Ministry include the construction of an international livestock market, installation of solar-powered freezers for meat butchers, implementation of a national animal identification and traceability system, as well as the development of a modern super gate to enhance livestock management and security.
He noted that despite being a newly created Ministry, significant progress has been made through strategic collaborations.
Dr. Bolarin noted that the Ministry has reached agreements with the Arab Union to establish a livestock city in Kogi State, while Chinese investors are expected to set up a meat processing factory.
He also noted that Nortra tractors from Denmark are planning to establish an assembly plant in the state.
“These projects, when fully implemented, will drive development, stimulate economic growth and bring qualitative improvements to the standard of living of the people of Kogi State,” the Commissioner said.
While describing the 2026 proposal as the first draft budget of the Ministry, Dr. Bolarin stressed the determination of the administration to reposition the livestock sector as a trailblazer in Nigeria.
He commended the House Committee for its support and oversight, which he said has helped align the Ministry’s programmes with the livestock development roadmap of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo.
Highlighting challenges facing the Ministry, the Commissioner listed the urgent need for a permanent office complex, recruitment of additional staff, operational vehicles for fieldwork, motorcycles for logistics, office furniture, ICT facilities, and capacity-building programmes for personnel.
He appealed to the lawmakers to use their legislative powers to support the Ministry, assuring them that approval of the 2026 budget would translate into effective implementation for the shared prosperity of all Kogites.
Earlier, the Chairman, House Committee on Livestock Development and Member Representing Adavi State Constituency, Hon. Asema Baba Haruna, in his welcome address, said the proposed budget was strategically designed to strengthen livestock production, improve animal health and enhance disease control across the state.
According to the Lawmaker, the sector contributes significantly to food security, rural employment, internally generated revenue and the state’s overall economic diversification drive.
He explained that the committee has deliberately designed programmes aimed at modernising livestock production, improving animal health services, reducing farmer–herder conflicts and promoting increased private sector participation in the industry.
