COVID-19: Egbeda-Egga Community Cancels 2020 Egga Day Celebration
In view of the devastating and destabilising impacts of the CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) pandemic currently ravaging the entire world, the people of Egbeda-Egga community has cancelled the forthcoming Egga Day Celebration, scheduled for Saturday, 27/06/2020.
The CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) outbreak has developed rapidly in 2020, with a significant number of infections across most countries of the world including Nigeria. This led to the declaration of COVID-19 as a global pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO), which also recommended containment and mitigation measures worldwide on March 11, 2020.
No doubt, steps taken to contain the virus have affected economic activities which in turn have implications for the 2020 Egbeda-Egga Day – an annual celebration of our cultural heritage and fundraising for the development of our community; that holds on the last Saturday in the month of June every year.
Among several measures put in place to prevent transmission of the virus are: limiting the movement of people, restricting flights and other travel, temporarily closing businesses and schools, and cancelling events. This is already having an immediate impact on businesses such as tourism, transport, retail and entertainment. It is also beginning to affect supply chains and the production of goods throughout the world as it has also lowered social and economic activities in both private and public sectors.
In response to the above, wide consultations were held among stakeholders in the Egga Day event. As a result, the community resolved to cancel the celebration for this year.
Notwithstanding the cancellation, all Branches of the community’s development union, Egbeda-Egga Development Union (EDU), have been encouraged to mobilise themselves and contribute towards programmes and activities aimed at ensuring an unhindered socio-economic development of the community.
