*Matter of urgent public importance calling on the Federal Government to intensify more effort to avert future occurrences on our major highways which has cost loss of lives and properties*.
Mr. Speaker, Distinguish colleagues, recall that, on Wednesday September 23rd, 2020, Kogi State was thrown into another state of pains, mourns and worries as a tanker carrying loads of oil had an accident and claim lives of over thirty (30) people and properties.
No fewer than 30 persons died on Wednesday when a petrol tanker exploded and ignited a fire that also destroyed property at Felele, Lokoja, Kogi State capital.
Also recall that, days after, another fire incident occurred around Ganaja area where a supermarket loaded with properties worth billions of naira was burnt down to ashes.
Whereas, we commend the prompt effort of the Governor of Kogi State, Alh. Yahaya Adoza Bello who visited the minister of works and housing, Babatunde Fashola, to solicit urgent Federal Government’s attention to the deplorable condition of federal roads in Kogi.
Note that, the state government has done a lot in maintaining the roads but owing to the large volume of traffic on the roads, in view of its strategic location as gateway state, such repairs and maintenance do not stand the test of time.
Prayers;
1. That the house observe a minute silence to honor the dead and pray for their soul
2. That the house make a resolution to the Federal Government to appeal for immediate repairs of our federal roads, most especially the Felele road which is a very busy route to many states.
3. That the house also, make a resolution to Federal Fire Service and the Kogi State Fire Service to equip the Lokoja office with fire equipment so as to repeal such incident in the future.
