Strike: Buhari urged to arrest instability in education sector.
A renowned Professor of Anatomy, Oladapo Ashiru has pleaded passionately with President Muhammadu Buhari to arrest instability in the education sector in the interest of the advancement of Nigeria.
He noted with grave concern that Nigerian students at the moment only know their admission year, but cannot predict or ascertain when they will graduate.
Prof Ashiru, of the Institute of Reproductive Medicine/Medical Art Centre, also spoke about the need for qualitative education through a review of the nation’s education system to promote skill acquisition and entrepreneurship as against the existing arrangement where most graduates are job seekers.
He spoke in Lagos at the conferment of the title of “Dame,” and the award of the “Tutuola Palm for Poetry” on Mrs. Tito Obaigbo at this year’s edition of the Lagos Book Convention – the Third Annual Literary Extravaganza, organised by Delta Publications Ltd in honour of the late author, Amos Tutuola.
Prof Ashiru, who became a Professor at 32 years, urged the federal government to increase budgetary allocations to the education sector as it is the case in developed countries and address the problem of recurring strikes, occasioned by its neglect of the sector over the years.
While praising Dame Obaigbo, an educationist, for her commitment and contributions to the growth of education, Prof Ashiru urged authors to produce quality books with the capacity to propel educational development and the production of well-equipped graduates.
He urged the wealthy in the society to emulate Dame Obaigbo, who was honoured for using her non-governmental organisation (NGO) – the Smart Book Club – and other personal resources to promote the reading culture among women folk and investing in the girl child education.
Responding, Dame Tito Obaigbo said she was humbled by the recognition, which was an indication of the fact that her little efforts were being appreciated.
She added that the award and honour would propel her to do more and encourage others to support similar causes.
The event held at the Freedom Park, Lagos, attracted dignitaries from across the country.
