The Akerejola family, the Ogori community, the academic community of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, the Industrial Training Fund, and indeed the entire nation, mourn the passing of a distinguished scholar, an astute administrator, and a revered traditional icon, Professor Olugbemiro Akerejola, who answered the eternal call of his Creator.
Professor Akerejola was a man of many parts, each facet polished to excellence. An erudite Professor of Veterinary Medicine, he dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge and its application for the betterment of society. His intellectual journey and professional service were marked by an unwavering commitment to excellence and integrity.
His tenure at the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, stands as a testament to his exceptional leadership capabilities. He served meritoriously as the Director of the School of General and Remedial Studies, where he shaped the foundational academic experiences of countless students. His insightful leadership continued as the Director of the Academic Planning Unit, where he played a pivotal role in steering the academic direction and upholding the high standards of the university. His contributions in these roles left an indelible mark on the institution’s academic landscape.
Beyond the ivory towers, Professor Akerejola was called to national service, where he demonstrated the same vigour and visionary leadership. As the Director-General of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Jos, he brought his academic precision and pragmatic approach to the crucial task of developing the nation’s manpower. He worked tirelessly to bridge the gap between academia and industry, designing and implementing programs that equipped thousands of Nigerians with critical technical and vocational skills for national development.
Despite his national stature, Professor Akerejola remained deeply rooted in his cultural heritage. As a prominent traditional title holder from Ogori, in Ogori/Magongo Local Government Area of Kogi State, he was a custodian of culture and a pillar of his community. He beautifully balanced the demands of modernity with the preservation of cherished traditions, offering wise counsel and selfless service for the progress of his people.
Prof. Olugbemiro Akerejola was more than his titles and positions; he was a mentor, a guide, a devoted family man, and a gentleman of impeccable character. His life was a profound lesson in service, humility, and intellectual rigour.
While I grieve this immense loss, I take solace in a life extraordinarily well-lived—a life that positively impacted academia, public service, and community development. His legacy is not merely in the offices he held but in the countless lives he touched and the institutions he strengthened.
I bid farewell to a true gem. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in perfect peace. Amen.
