A Security expert, Mr Ukwunetu Ali, has recommended the modernisation and restructuring of Kogi State Vigilante Service to enhance security and combat insecurity in the state.
Ali made the recommendation in a proposal he submitted to the Kogi State Government and made a copy available to our Reporter on Friday in Lokoja.
Ali, an Assistant Superintendent of Corrections with the Nigerian Correctional Service, said the proposal became necessary amidst the rising insecurity in Kogi.
He highlighted the need for modernisation and professionalisation of the vigilante group to tackle the growing security challenges in the state.
The proposal emphasised the importance of recruiting educated and skilled youths into the vigilante system, improving compensation packages, and providing adequate funding and logistics to enhance their effectiveness.
It also recommended collaboration with formal security agencies and establishing clear accountability frameworks to ensure professionalism and prevent abuse of power.
According to the proposal, the reorganisation of the vigilante group would significantly strengthen the fight against insecurity and contribute to the restoration of lasting peace and stability across the state.
It highlighted the potential benefits of the restructuring, including enhanced security, support for overstretched security agencies, and cost-effective security solution.

The proposal comes on the heels of recent attacks in Kogi State, including the killing of three policemen and two vigilantes.
The author condemned the attacks and calls for collective action to address the security challenges facing the state.
