​KOGI DEPUTY SPEAKER EGWABA MOURNS VICTIMS OF ‘DEVASTATING’ ONUGWA BOAT MISHAP, CALLS FOR ENHANCED WATER SAFETY AND FLOOD RELIEF.

​The Deputy Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly and member representing Ibaji State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Comfort Ojoma Nwuchiola Egwaba, has expressed profound grief and described the recent boat mishap at Onugwa, Ibaji Local Government Area, as “utterly devastating.”

The tragic incident, which occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 30, 2025, on the River Niger, is confirmed to have claimed several lives, with approximately 20 bodies recovered so far from the vessel that was reportedly carrying over 100 passengers.

​Rt. Hon. Egwaba extends her deepest condolences to the bereaved families, the people of Onugwa, and the entire Ibaji LGA, particularly those within her constituency who have been directly impacted by this dual tragedy.

The Deputy Speaker passionately called for improved water transportation safety, stressing the urgent need for relevant maritime and federal agencies to strictly enforce safety standards, especially as the state grapples with the annual flooding season. She emphasized the need for a concerted and immediate response from both State and Federal emergency and humanitarian agencies.

​The lawmaker reaffirmed her commitment to standing with her people through this difficult time, offering prayers for God’s comfort for the families of the deceased and the entire constituency.
