Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, has inaugurated new executive members for the Students’ Union Government (SUG) and the National Association of Kogi State Students (NAKOSS) for the 2025/2026 Academic Session.
The inauguration ceremony was held on Thursday, 27th November, 2025 at the 200-Twin Lecture Theatre of the Polytechnic Main Campus, Lokoja.
In his address, the Rector, Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman, congratulated the new SUG and NAKOSS executive members, charging them to uphold the ideals of transparency, accountability and genuine student-focused unionism.
Professor Usman urged them to align their activities with the values they campaigned on, emphasizing that student leadership must be rooted in service, sincerity and responsibility.
He cautioned the executive members against allowing themselves to be used by mischief-makers who are fond of circulating fake news within the Polytechnic community.
He encouraged them to maintain integrity, prioritize the welfare of students, and serve as true ambassadors of the Institution.
The Rector also used the occasion to address and dispel circulating rumours, alleging the presence of bandits on the Polytechnic campus.
He described the claim as completely false, and reaffirmed that there was no security breach whatsoever within the Institution.
According to him, the peaceful and uninterrupted inauguration ceremony was enough evidence that the rumour was baseless.
He stressed that Kogi State Polytechnic remains safe and calm, noting that such misinformation was the usual handiwork of mischief-makers who attempt to create unnecessary panic.
“There is no bandit in Kogi Poly,” he stated.
“We are peacefully and successfully inaugurating the newly elected SUG leaders.”
While commending the Chairman and members of the Students’ Union Electoral Committee for conducting a free, fair and transparent election, the Rector praised candidates who conceded defeat for demonstrating sportsmanship, urging the winners to remain humble and lead with maturity.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing students’ welfare, and creating an environment conducive to academic excellence.
Prof. Usman also gave stern warnings against cultism, cult related activities, drug abuse, hooliganism, and any form of social vices, stressing that his administration operates on zero-tolerance policy toward such misconducts.
He also used the occasion to commend the Executive Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, for creating an enabling environment for learning and for consistently prioritizing the security and welfare of the state.
He noted that the stability enjoyed on campus and across the state is a direct reflection of the Governor’s commitment to good governance and proactive security management.
Prof. Usman further emphasized that discrimination along religious, ethnic or tribal lines would not be condoned under any circumstance, urging the student leaders to promote unity, inclusiveness and peaceful coexistence across the campus.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Students’ Union Electoral Committee, Engr. Dr. Mohammed Alhaji Adamu, commended the students for their orderly conduct throughout the electoral process.
He also appreciated the Polytechnic management and committee members for their support, which he said contributed greatly to the successful conclusion of the polls.
In their separate goodwill messages, the Dean of Student Services, Mr. Abdulmumuni Umar Onimisi; the Chief Security Officer, Mr. Emmanuel Attah Onuh; and the Director of Legal Services, Barrister Joy Ajuma Mamuda, advised the new executive members to promote peaceful coexistence on campus.
They encouraged the leaders to build on the successes of their predecessors, remain law-abiding and uphold the image of the institution at all times.
In his acceptance speech, the new SUG President, Abdulmalik Abdulwahab, appreciated his co-contestants for their sportsmanship and promised to be magnanimous in victory.
He assured students that his administration would raise the bar of student unionism and work tirelessly to address their needs, while soliciting collective support for a successful tenure.
Similarly, the newly inaugurated NAKOSS President, Wale Sheyi Godwin, pledged to ensure proper representation and effective advocacy for all Kogi State indigenes studying in the Polytechnic.
Both student leaders also commended the Rector for promptly addressing the rumour of bandits’ attack on campus, describing the claim as politically motivated and orchestrated by enemies of the Polytechnic and the state.
They assured students and the general public that the institution remains safe and stable, urging them to disregard falsehoods aimed at undermining the progress recorded under the current management.
Highlights of the event include the administration of the oath of office and the issuance of certificates of return to both SUG and NAKOSS executive members.
