The Kogi Central Persons with Disabilities Association acknowledges and appreciates the effort of DAM Foundation to include persons with disabilities in its recent empowerment programme through the provision of ten (10) cartons of Indomie instant noodles.
However, after careful consideration and collective reflection, the items were respectfully rejected and returned. This decision was taken not out of ingratitude, but out of principle.
Persons with disabilities in Okene and across Kogi Central are not seeking pity, sympathy, or token gestures. We are citizens with equal rights, equal dignity, and equal capacity to contribute meaningfully to society when provided with the same empowerment opportunities extended to others.
While we affirm that DAM Foundation is inclusive in intention and we do not label the Foundation as discriminatory, we believe that true inclusion goes beyond symbolic gestures. Inclusion must be reflected in equitable access to empowerment tools, livelihood support, and economic opportunities, just as provided to other beneficiaries of the programme.
Gone are the days when persons with disabilities are viewed merely as objects of charity. Disability is not inability, and empowerment—not handouts—is what fosters independence, productivity, and social inclusion.
We therefore call on DAM Foundation and all well-meaning organizations to engage persons with disabilities through a rights-based and inclusive development approach, ensuring that future interventions reflect equality, respect, and dignity for all.
