Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo on Thursday inaugurated the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) in Lokoja, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening security and safeguarding lives and property across the state.
The Governor who was represented by his Deputy Joel Salifu Oyibo at the inauguration of the special unit, described the event as a significant milestone in the state’s ongoing efforts to combat violent crime and enhance public safety.
He noted that security remains the cornerstone of his administration’s agenda, stressing that no meaningful development can thrive in an atmosphere of insecurity.
To strengthen the security architecture of the state, the governor provided four Toyota Hilux vehicles, three Toyota Sienna vehicles, and a bullet-proof Buffalo Armoured Personnel Carrier.
While commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support for security agencies nationwide, governor Ododo acknowledged the efforts of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu in policing effectively across the country.
Addressing officers of the unit, the governor charged them to serve with integrity, act swiftly, and protect citizens with courage, emphasizing that the people of Kogi State depend on their professionalism and dedication.
Earlier, the Commissioner of Police, Kogi state command CP Nazir Bello Kankarofi, described the initiative as a strategic response to evolving security challenges threatening lives and property in the state.
CP Kankarofi said the establishment of the Unit was in line with the reform-driven policing directives of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, which emphasize proactive policing, intelligence-led operations, and rapid response mechanisms.
“The security environment in recent times has continued to present complex challenges, including armed banditry, kidnapping, and highway attacks. These threats require a coordinated and intelligence-driven operational structure capable of swift intervention,” he stated.
According to him, the VCRU is designed as a rapid-response tactical team with a mandate to respond promptly to violent incidents, disrupt criminal networks, enhance surveillance, and strengthen inter-agency collaboration.
He noted that the Unit would also improve response time, boost public confidence in law enforcement, and ensure a safer environment for residents and visitors in the state.
In his remark, the state security adviser, Jerry Omadara lauded the establishment of VCRU in Kogi state, noting that the effort will add value to the security activities of the state.
He reassured that the state government will continue to support the security agencies to enable them perform the statutory obligations.
Highlight of the occasion is the donation of four operational vehicles to the unit by the Kogi state government.
