Kwara: NSCDC Arrests 21-Year-Old Man For Alleged Murder

The Kwara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a 21-year-old man, Soliu Olarewaju Mujeeb, for allegedly kidnapping and killing an electrical technician, Mr. Olarewaju Olusegun Afolabi, in Ilorin.
The suspect was apprehended following an investigation into the disappearance of Afolabi, who reportedly left his residence on June 7, 2026, to inspect an electrical wiring project but failed to return home.
Briefing journalists at the NSCDC Command Headquarters in Ilorin on Sunday, the State Commandant, Abbas Nda Mohammed, said the case was reported to the Corps’ Tracking Unit on June 11 after family members became worried about the victim’s whereabouts.
Mohammed disclosed that shortly after Afolabi went missing, his relatives began receiving calls demanding a ransom of ₦2 million through the victim’s mobile phone.
According to him, the family could only raise the sum of ₦120,000, which was paid based on instructions provided by the caller.
“The family members started receiving ransom demands through the victim’s phone. They were asked to pay ₦2 million, but they could only raise ₦120,000, which was eventually paid,” the Commandant said.
He explained that operatives of the NSCDC immediately launched thorough investigations, including the analysis of transactions linked to the victim’s Opay account, which eventually led to the arrest of the suspect.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to the crime and revealed that he had previously worked with the deceased as a joinman in electrical installation services.
According to the NSCDC, the suspect admitted that lingering disagreements between him and the victim had created resentment.
“He stated that he lured the victim to an uncompleted building in the Kongile, Kunlende area of Ilorin under the guise of inspecting a new electrical project,” Mohammed disclosed.
The Commandant added that the suspect confessed to attacking and killing the technician before taking possession of his mobile phone and SIM card.
“He further admitted that he used the victim’s phone to contact family members and demand ransom after committing the act,” he said.
The NSCDC boss revealed that the suspect later led investigators to the scene of the incident, where a shallow grave believed to contain the victim’s remains was discovered.
Security operatives also recovered the victim’s mobile phone and SIM card from the suspect during the investigation.
Mohammed said the case would be transferred to the appropriate security agency for further investigation and prosecution after the completion of preliminary procedures.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the NSCDC to protecting lives and property across Kwara State and stresse
d the importance of collaboration among security agencies in tackling criminal activities.
“We remain committed to ensuring the safety of residents and will continue to work closely with other security agencies to rid the state of criminal elements,” he said.
The Commandant also appealed to residents to remain vigilant and provide timely and credible information to security agencies to aid crime prevention and investigation.
