The Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Aliyu Umar Yusuf has assured citizens of the state that the main focus of the current 8th Assembly under his leadership is to ensure accelerated consideration to legislations that would improve their quality of life.
Rt Hon Yusuf stated this on Thursday in Lokoja in an address at a Town Hall Meeting where Palliative Plans by Kogi State Government as a result of Fuel Subsidy Removal organised by the State NGO Network (KONGONET), was discussed.
The Speaker, who was represented at the event by his Chief Press Secretary, Yabagi Mohammed, noted that current members of the State House of Assembly from the entire 25 State Constituencies are people of empathy who have rolled up their sleeves and ready to bring development to their people.
In the speaker’s words, “There are many factors uniting us as legislators in the current Assembly of Kogi State. One of the factors worthy of mention is the fact that we are committed to ensuring that every piece of legislation that would improve lives of the people us given speedy hearing.
“The Assembly members are men and women of integrity and passion for the overall growth of the state. We are working closely with the executive in that regard and the Executive Governor, His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Bello is giving us the needed attention to ensure we cascade democracy dividends to our people at the grassroots.
“Recall that despite not being the time for us to resume from recess, this Assembly had an emergency plenary on Thursday, the 3rd of August, this year, to have an exhaustive deliberation on the need to device modalities for ensuring government provides palliatives for the citizens of the state.
“During that plenary, we called on the state government to ensure that measures are put in place, involving us the legislature, in efforts to mitigate the negative impact of subsidy removal on the people of Kogi State.”
The Speaker therefore used the occasion to call on Non – Governmental Organisations in the state to assist the government by making their own efforts towards ensuring the people of the state get the intervention that would improve their quality of life.
While expressing gratitude to the network for their show passion towards the plight of the people, he expressed the willingness of his office and the current Assembly to working closely with them to evolve necessary legislations that would enhance smoother working relationship for the good of the state and the society at large.
