APPEAL FOR AFFIRMATIVE CANDIDACY FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES IN KOGI STATE LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS
By Hon Ahmed Abdulkareem Onimisi
To: His Excellency, Alhaji Usman Ahmed Ododo, Executive Governor of Kogi State, and Honorable Abdullahi Bello, State APC Party Chairman
We humbly appeal to your esteemed offices to consider implementing affirmative candidacy measures for persons with disabilities in the upcoming local government chairmanship and counselor elections in Kogi State.
Persons with disabilities possess unique skills, talents, and perspectives that can significantly contribute to societal development. Their inclusion in governance will bring:
– Innovative problem-solving approaches
– Enhanced representation and advocacy for marginalized communities
– Diverse perspectives, leading to more inclusive policy-making
– Role models for empowerment and inspiration
Building on the progressive legacy of the previous administration under Alhaji Yahaya Adoza, which successfully empowered youth and women with affirmative positions, we urge you to extend similar opportunities to persons with disabilities. Specifically, we request:
– At least one counselor position in each ward
– At least one chairman position among the 21 local government areas
Furthermore, we propose a 60% discount on the price of expression of interest and nomination forms for persons with disabilities interested in running for office. This gesture will help bridge the economic gap, as approximately 95% of persons with disabilities face significant financial constraints.
By embracing inclusive governance, Kogi State and the APC can demonstrate commitment to equal opportunities, social justice, and human rights. This will not only enhance the state’s reputation but also tap into the vast potential of persons with disabilities, driving sustainable development and progress.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
