The OPay Digital Services has been commended for its scholarship initiative aimed at alleviating the financial burden of students pursuing higher education in Nigeria.
The Rector of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Engr. Dr. Abdul Jimoh Muhammed, gave the commendation on Wednesday in Ilorin while hosting the representatives of the OPay who were in the institution to explain their proposed partnership with the institution.
Abdul , who highlighted the importance of the initiative in promoting educational access and equity, commended the organisation for including polytechnics in their scope of coverage, particularly for choosing Kwara State Polytechnic as a beneficiary among the 10 selected institutions in the country.
He, however, urged the Opay to expand its philanthropic gestures beyond scholarships to include infrastructure improvements such as building hostels, classrooms, and ICT facilities, which he said would significantly benefit the student community and create a more conducive learning environment.
The Rector also called for collaboration of the institution with the OPay in agricultural initiatives, adding that this would complement the Polytechnic’s efforts in enhancing food sufficiency within the State and also expose students to the practical aspect of their course of study.
Earlier in his remarks, the representative of the OPay Digital Services, Mr. Itoro Udo, had disclosed that the primary aim of the initiative is to promote career development, foster inclusiveness, and provide financial support to deserving students.
Udo added that the scholarship is open to all undergraduate students of Kwara State Polytechnic who maintain an active OPay account, adding that each beneficiary of the scholarship would receive ₦300,000 per academic session.
According to him, at least 20 students would be sponsored annually for the next 10 years, demonstrating OPay’s commitment to education and youth empowerment.
