The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has described late elder statesman and former PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, as a detribalised Nigerian.
Akpabio said Tukur was a great patriot and towering national figure whose contributions transcended ethnic and political boundaries.
He stated this on Tuesday during a condolence visit to the family of the former governor of the defunct Gongola State.

kpabio, who arrived Nigeria from Italy on Monday, recalled his personal relationship with Tukur, noting that the late statesman chaired an event he attended in London in 2009.
He said Tukur left behind a legacy of love, wisdom and service to the nation worthy of emulation by younger politicians.
The Senate President expressed regret that the elder statesman was no longer alive to share his wealth of experience and wisdom.
He added that Tukur’s contributions to national development would remain memorable and continue to inspire generations.
Akpabio disclosed that the National Assembly would honour the late elder statesman on the floor of the Senate when it resumes plenary.
He urged Tukur’s children to uphold the values for which their father was known and sustain his legacy of service.
Responding on behalf of the family, Mahmoud Tukur thanked Akpabio, his wife Unoma and his entourage for the visit.
He also appreciated President Bola Tinubu and Nigerians for honouring his father, who died at 90 on September 12, 2026.
