The National President of the Nigeria Information Technology Professionals in Civil and Public Service (NITPCS), Professor Rasheed Gbenga Jimoh, has charged information technology professionals to take leading roles in the country’s digital transformation and national development.
Jimoh gave the charge at the 2026 Annual Summit of the NITPCS, held at The Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State, themed, “The Emerging Gig Economy: Implications for IT Professionals in Public and Civil Service”.
The NITPCS President said the rapid development of digital platforms, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, automation and remote working was redefining how skills were acquired, services delivered and economic value created.
He noted that the emerging gig economy offers IT professionals opportunities for continuous learning, professional mobility, innovation, knowledge sharing and the deployment of specialised digital skills.
He, however, identified cybersecurity, data protection, remuneration, career progression, recruitment and institutional governance as critical areas requiring attention as public-sector institutions adapt to changing employment patterns.
Jimoh urged IT professionals to move beyond their traditional roles as operators of computer systems and networks to become strategic partners and architects of digital transformation.
He maintained that Nigeria could not afford to remain a passive consumer of digital technologies but must develop the capacity to create, innovate and deploy technology in addressing national challenges.
According to him, a future-ready public service must be digitally skilled, agile, data-driven, citizen-centred and capable of responding effectively to emerging technological developments.
He called for deliberate investment in the continuous professional development of IT personnel and the creation of opportunities for young Nigerians to acquire globally relevant digital skills.
Jimoh also emphasised the importance of ensuring that technological innovation did not compromise security, privacy, accountability or national interests.
He described the summit as a platform for professional engagement, knowledge exchange, capacity development and policy dialogue, urging participants to develop practical recommendations that could translate into policies, programmes and institutional reforms.
The NITPCS President congratulated the award recipients, describing their recognition as a reflection of their contributions to digital transformation, community development and purposeful leadership.
He also expressed appreciation to the dignitaries, speakers, partners, sponsors, delegates and members of the organising committee for their contributions to the success of the summit.
