Senate C’ttee on ICT visits National Universities Commission (NUC), others

The Chairman, Senate Committee on ICT and Cybercrime, Senator Yakubu Oseni on Tuesday visited the National Universities Commission (NUC) and Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

Senator Oseni in his presentation said the dynamics of modern day technological advancements being championed by the senate made it mandatory for the visits to public institutions to ensure it aligns with all regulatory requirements as regards cyber security.

While urging the organisations to improve on their ICT compliance, he noted that the oversight findings had revealed serious gaps in digital infrastructure and data sophistication in the country, which made it prone to cyber threats.

According to Senator Oseni, the senate in November 2019 based on discoveries considered a motion on the “Growth of Digital Technology and Challenges of Cybercrime” with urgent need to safeguard the future of Nigeria which informed the mandate given his committee.

He added that the mandate of the Committee on ICT and Cybercrime are to among other things, establish engagements with relevant stakeholders to galvanize a comprehensive, broad-based approach to addressing Nigeria’s digital technology issues and adopt safety measures.

At the National Universities Commission where he was received by the Deputy Executive Secretary Academic, Dr. Suleiman Babatunde Ramon-Yusuf on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Abubakar Adams Rasheed, the commission assured its compliance and commended the committee for its interest in working to ensure safety in the cyberspace.

In a related development, the Senate Committee who was received in Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) by the Registrar-General, Alhaji Garba Abubakar, explained to the Senate the organisation’s new online reservation format that could be made from the comfort of one’s home and the submission of all the necessary documents and the choice of location for delivery of Certificate of Incorporation or Registration, as the case may be.
