Following the prolonged crisis between t Bassa Kwomu and Egbira Mozum, the house standing committee on security and vigilante in the Kogi State House of Assembly has sued for peace between the warring parties in Bassa Local Government.
The crisis which has lasted for over seven years has led to loss of hundreds of lives and properties worth billions of naira destroyed.
Addressing the aggrieved parties in Oguma, Headquarter of Bassa Local Government Area of Kogi State, the Chairman House standing Committee on Security and Vigilante Hon. Major Enefola argued that peace remains a panacea 
for sustainable development in any nation.
He lamented on the crisis between the two warring parties describing it as disastrous and unnecessary.
According to him”War come’s from the heart. If the heart accept to take it, such will come and it will have a devasting effect on the people. This committee is here with the permission and authority of the Kogi State Government. Governor Usman Ododo has every information of us being here today including the Speaker, Kogi State House of Assembly because all we are clamouring for is peace in this Local Government.
” We started this process since October last year through a motion raised by a Lawmaker in the assembly. Following that motion, the house resolved that this standing committee on security should wade into the matter for the interest of our people which we are doing now”.
Enefola, who is also the member representing Igalamela Odolu State Constituency asserted that their visit is to get first hand information of the crisis between the two ethnic group and to chart a way forward to resolve them.
He appealed to the aggrieved parties to eschew bitterness and hatred against one another, warning against stockpiling arms and ammunition adding that, any one caught in this illegal act will face the full wrath of the law.
“Stockpiling of arms and ammunition must come to an end today. We must see our neighbors as brother and friends so that, lasting peace can return to this Local Government.
“Anyone that is not a security personnel is not allowed to hold arms and ammunition. Doing this, you are acting against the law of the land. The entire People of Bassa Local Government must join hands together to develop their place so that peace will return again”.
” Biroko, Ozugbe, Bieze, Daku Domozu communities whose occupant have been sacked from their ancestral home due to the crisis, the house will hasten their returns and quick resettlement” he stated.
The lawmaker, however, appealed to Youths in the communities to shun all forms of crimes and criminalities in the State the communal clash between the aggrieved parties has brought about under development in the area.
Also speaking, the member representing Kogi Koton Karfe State Constituency Hon Idrees Maikudi Aliyu argued that it is time for peace to return to the area in a bid to attract meaningful development in the area.
“Due to the consistent killings and conflicts in Bassa Local Government, this has not brought about any meaningful development. It is high time we all speak in one voice by putting our differences behind to promote peace irrespective of where place of origin” he advised.
Another Lawmaker from Olamaboro State Constituency
Anthony Ujah called on aggrieved parties to submit their arms as the State Government is willing to give amnesty to those who are willing to submit the weapons for the interest of Peace.
On his part, the member representing Dekina Biraidu State Constituency Hon. Usman Ochidi Shehu described the prolonged crisis between the two group as unfortunate pointing out that, Bassa Local Government is the food basket of Kogi East.
Continuing, the first time Lawmaker in the Kogi State House of Assembly said “We are not going to leave any stone unturned to put an end to this crisis that have caused our brothers and sisters pains.
“The current eight Assembly will give a sounding verdict while presenting our reports to the Governor of Kogi State so that peace can return to Bassa Local Government. Under the leadership of Governor Ododo, it will be on record that peace will finally return to our State”.
Adding her voice, the member representing Ijumu State Constituency Hon. Ishaya Omotayo Adeleye, while expressing her delight on the efforts and the Assembly to restore normalcy to the affected communities maintained that Women were mostly affected during the Bassa Kwomu and Egbura Mozum crisis.
Adeleye averred that “War is not good for any society. Anyone promoting the ember of crisis is an enemy of the State that should be wiped away like a plague of locus. For me, am delighted with the efforts being put in place by All stakeholders to see that our Women, Children and Father return to their ancestral homes.
“Bassa Local Government is Kogi State eye for agriculture. As Lawmakers, we can’t continue to fold our arms and allow our people to be displaced and our properties destroyed. This must stop now”.
Not happy with the devastating effects of the crisis, member representing Ajaokuta State Constituency Hon. Abu Onoru-Oiza opined that the Assembly will not entertain any monarch fueling crisis for their own selfish interest.
“As a lawmaker in this State, I won’t hesitate to move a motion calling on the State Government to dethrone any Monarch who wants to sabotage the peace of our State. Enough is a Enough of this madness of killings and destruction of our People’s properties.
“Bassa Local Government is one part of Kogi State that is blessed with various natural resources, but unfortunately, many has not been tapped because of this crisis. What the warring parties are fighting for is just 0.5 percent they already have in the Local Government.
Responding to this laudable move by the Lawmakers, the Executive Chairman, Bassa Local Government Theophilus Daruwana appreciated Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and the current assembly for their relentless commitment to broker peace in the already stretched crisis.
The peace deal between the warring communities was attended by Youths, traditional rulers, stakeholders, and various security apparatus in the State.
The Kogi State House of Assembly Committee on Security and Vigilante is expected to present it report to Governor Ododo on possible recommendations to avert future crisis between Bassa Kwomu and Egbura Mozum Communities in Bassa Local Government Area of the State.
