MRS AGBOGUN, LEAH MEKA
A sport administrator, educationist and unionist par Excellence
Mrs. Leah Meka Agbogun (nee Odama) is a retired director with the Adamawa Post Primary Schools Board. She was born on 26th November, 1960 at Okene, but she is an indigene of Ogori in Ogori-Magongo Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria.
Leah as a young girl enrolled at the St. Andrew’s Anglican Primary School, Okene for her primary education which she completed brilliantly. Her love to groom younger generations for better tomorrow and her strong passion for teaching profession, gave her some impetus to seek for admission to the Kaduna Teachers’ College, Kaduna, where she came out in flying colours.
Mrs. Agbogun was offered admission as a student at the advanced Teachers’ College, Zaria (now Federal College of Education) where she obtained her Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE). She belonged to one of the last set of NCE holders that took part in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme before NCE holders were barred from participating in the mandatory national service. She was posted to Gongola State (now Adamawa State), precisely to Yola, the State Sport Council.
Mrs. Agbogun was a student at the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria where she bagged her first degree in Physical and Health Education B.ED.
She started her working career with the Adamawa State Post Primary Schools Board, Yola and she rose rapidly through the ranks and in late 2020, she retired from active service as a director. The secret behind her success as a civil servant are based on some factors such as: she was dedicated to her job, humble, accessible, kind, honest, firm and strong in character but most importantly she has the fear of God in her.
Before her retirement from service, she belonged to the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and other professional bodies. She was elected as the publicity secretary of the NUT at the local government level and she performed creditably well which served as the basis of her being elected to the position of the state treasurer of NUT where she served for eight years without blemish. Also, there was the clarion call on Mrs. Agbogun to vie for the post of the state auditor of the Union based on her earlier performances in other offices she had occupied. She won the election and she served as the state auditor of the Adamawa State chapter of the NUT for four years.
As a trade unionist, she had opportunities to traverse every state in Nigeria except Rivers State, as well as travelled to Brazil, Germany, Egypt and Togo.
Madam, Agbogun has been a strong member of her church and she enjoys to serve at any level of the church.
Mrs. Agbogun is a great lover of her country-home, Ogori and she enjoys promoting all that the community stands for. For instance, she always put it on herself to host or accommodate any Ogorian posted to Adamawa State for the national service (NYSC) at no cost to the guests hosted by her.
Her philanthropic gestures have no boundary; she has strong passion for Ogori’s development. She has provided comely smiles on the faces of the poor in Yola and Ogori. Any of her visits to Ogori always brings hope and joy to many who have longed to be assisted.
Her hobbies include sport and watching documentaries. She has strong interest in business.
She is happily married to Engr. George Agbogun and the marriage is blessed with lovely children.
