The Federal Government announces that His Excellency, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has assented to the _National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act, 2026, on June 26, 2026_.
Under the new Act, your National Identification Number *NIN* is now the single, unified means of identification for accessing essential services in Nigeria. All Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and regulated private institutions are required to recognize and verify the NIN for the following:
1. *International passport issuance and renewal*
2. *Voter registration and electoral processes*
3. *Opening and operation of bank accounts*
4. *Land and property transactions*
5. *SIM card registration and telecommunications services*
6. *Pension enrollment and payments*
7. *Insurance policies*
8. *Tax registration and payments*
9. *Consumer credit and access to government social services*
*One Person. One Identity. One Number.*
*KEY BENEFITS TO NIGERIANS*
1. *End of Multiple IDs:* Previously, Nigerians needed separate IDs for passports, driver’s licenses, BVN, and SIM registration. The NIMC Act, 2026 mandates full integration across government databases. Your NIN now serves as the single “master key”, reducing paperwork, duplication, and the burden of carrying multiple ID cards.
2. *Stronger Data Protection:* The Act introduces enhanced cybersecurity and data privacy standards. All personal data held by NIMC must be secured with advanced encryption and digital authentication. Unauthorized access, misuse, or sale of citizens’ data by any entity now attracts stiff legal penalties.
3. *Improved Security Against Fraud:* With biometric verification — fingerprints and facial recognition — linked to every NIN, identity theft and impersonation become extremely difficult. The law prescribes severe penalties for fraudulent registration, impersonation, and unlawful use of another person’s identity, protecting Nigerians from financial and property fraud.
The Federal Government urges all citizens and legal residents who have not enrolled to do so at any NIMC center nationwide. If you already have a NIN, ensure your records are updated.
