In its efforts at ensuring environmental sanity in the State, the Kwara state Government has apprehended and prosecuted a number of residents for violating the state’s environmental laws.
Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Remilekun Banigbe, disclosed this on Thursday in Ilorin, the state capital, while monitoring the proceedings of the mobile courts set up at Odota, Airport axis and Flower Garden in Ilorin metropolis.
Hon. Banigbe said there was the need to set up the mobile courts to promptly try environmental sanitation violators because some residents repeatedly violate the environmental laws, stating that the exercise would be a continuous one until serenity is attained in the State.
She said some of the culprits were sentenced to a minimum of one month jail term with an option of fine of N20,000 or both, as declared by the courts, noting that this act would reduce the incessant habit of indiscriminate dumping of refuse and other environmental vices in the State.
The Commissioner added that this would further enhance the facelift of the environment for the betterment of the populace.
