The Kogi State Government has reiterated it’s commitment towards protecting the girl child, in a bid to make them impact meaningfully in any society.
The Kogi State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajia Fatima Kabir Buba disclosed this on Tuesday against the backdrop of the 2022 international day of Girl Child with the theme Our Time is Now, Our Rights, Our Future”.
Buba explained that the VAPP bill recently signed into law by Kogi State Governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello further portray the State Government commitment in providing sense of belonging to the girl child adding that, any individual caught violating this law will face the ambit of the law.
” The present administration is gender sensitive and remains committed in protecting our girl child. It is no longer news under our performing Governor, that we have attained more than 35 percent affirmative action for Women in elective positions.
” It should be noted that the issues of rape, gender discrimination, molestations and many more will attract stiff sanction in accordance to the law of the land. Any individual thinking of this evil act should think otherwise. Our Girl Child are our future. So it is very important that they are highly protected because remain a backbone for national development.
Speaking on importance of the International Day Of Girl Child, the Kogi State Commissioner for Women Affairs said the day is observed to celebrate the achievements of girls Worldwide.
According to her, the day aims to educate girls about their rights, which will enable them to realize their full potential and transform the world around them.
“The purpose of International day of Girl Child is to spread awareness of women’s and girl’s rights and to encourage them to realizing their full potential.

Girls are ready for a decade of acceleration forward. It is time for us all to stand accountable – with and for girls – and to invest in a future that believes in their agency, leadership and potential” she emphacized.
It could be recalled that, 19th December, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to declare October 11th as the international day of the girl child.
