Kogi State House of Assembly has repealed and reenacted the state Local Government Law 2000 and all matters connected therewith.
This was after a clause by clause consideration of the bill by committee of whole on the floor of the State House of Assembly.
The reenacted law gives the state government the power to appoint Transistion Committee which tenure should last for six months where there is no Local Government election.
The reenacted law also states that the above provision which is subject to the approval of the House, adds that the tenure of the Transition Committee Chairman can be extended after the first six months subject to the approval of the House.
Also, the Transition Committee shall consists of seven members which includes the member representing the state constituency .
The above , according to the reenacted law, takes care of the period when there is no election whereas an elected council chairman shall spend two years in office..
Earlier, the Majority Leader of the House , Hon Suleiman Abdulrasaq who doubles as representative of Okene Town state constituency, in his lead debate explained the changes in the law.
Also the representative of Ajaokuta state constituency, Hon Abu Jibrin explained that the repeal and reenactment of the Local Government law by the state assembly was not done in exemption as Taraba, Sokoto and Adamawa states recently did same .
Explaining that any decision on tenureship by House of Assembly on the Local Government is upheld by the Industrial Court, Hon Jibrin said he was in support of the bill.
Majority of the lawmakers spoke in support of the reenactment of the law in a bid to fill up the existing vacancies created by the expiration of the tenure of former council chairman and as a means to prevent insecurity .
The bill which is an executive one was thereafter given its third and final reading.
