Women Who Don’t Breastfeed Regularly Are at Risk of Cancer – Expert
The Kogi State Programme Manager of Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRiN), Mr. Ogundusi Bolarinwa says women who refuse to breastfeed their babies are at risk of Cancer.
This is just as he stated that the breast milk consist of 70% of water contrary to the believe that children from 1-6 months should be given water along with breast milk.
The Project Manager was speaking in Lokoja, on the sideline on a road walk to commemorate the World Breastfeeding Week with the theme ” Step Up For Breastfeeding: Educate and Support.”
According to him, 29% of children in Nigeria are exclusively breastfed, while 32% of Kogi Children enjoyed breastfeeding for six months.
Bolarinwa maintained that education is key to ensuring that nursing mothers understand the importance of exclusive breastfeeding, saying the Breast milk contains the necessary ingredients for the effective growth of the child.
He stated that the target audiences for this year’s celebration include; governments, health systems, workplaces and communities with the aime of informing, educating and empowering them to strengthen their capacity to provide and sustain breastfeeding-friendly environments for families.
“Because by diet, Breast milk is the best food in the world, it has the right quality, the right temperature and right quantity. There is no other food like breast milk and you get it from every mother. You don’t need to buy it. I used to tell people the quality of the breast milk of the richest woman in the world is just like that of the poorest woman in the world.”
The Project Manager urged the Governments at all levels to make policies that will encourage exclusive breastfeeding.
