It is no gain saying that since Nigeria independence there has being so many reforms to our educational system. It is observed the curriculum of our present educational system has no impact on our reality. The curriculum in use today was inherited from past year’s when education is limited to few courses and professional fields. In that past years we recognize professional fields which today they are obsolete calling for upward review. . The products of formal education are in labour market struggling to survive and take care of their family. Most families no longer waste their resources in sending their children or wards to universities only to come back and become liability to the parents who are already old and living from little generated resources to mouth to surviving the situation.
Nigeria policy of making green collar job available to the youth is not forth coming. They set up palliative empowerment programs which further drain our economy the more. No result of that investment. Our young girls end up marrying at early age to old rich men who end up making them child producing factory. Young promising boys are seen in the street seeking for menial jobs or learning mechanic, tailoring, panel beaters etc. What hope has education in our children and the society at large.? Education for the time past has never be free. Parents pay heavily to enroll their children or wards in schools such as school of Nursing,polytechnic, colleges of education, universities etc. Many of them graduate and revert back to be drivers, roadside mechanics, panel beaters and in some worst cases house robbers stealing from home to home. A visit to corrections centres we will see a large number of youths been houses for reformation. How do we reform the youths when the society is not reformed by it’s policy actions and institutional structures. The way out of these institutional menace is for government to review our Educational system to take care of what we called informal educational system that is turning out to be a safe ground for upliftments of the youths. If we fail to reposition our educational system l feared what the society will look like in the next ten twenty fifty years from now. Let’s take a look at china, Kenya and so many Africa nations and some third world countries they saw the down ward trend in their educational system and develop professional skilled areas where their children are trained. Today children are rushing to attend school with no hope for future. Our young girls spend their productive age in hotels, ghettos to practice prostitution. In large cities the roads are traffic jamb with young ladies waiting for cheap men to carry them home to spend the night for a bill of #5000 upwards. The religious institutions are not adding valve to these children. The leadership of these churches have tried to provide succour but not much is achieved. What stop churches empowering it youths to any professional job and after the completion of such training they are financially empowered to start their individual business. Ritual business is fast selling as hopes to get money through legitimate means have failed. They engage in rituals to get blood money at all cost. Young men now engaged in ritual killing of people who become their victim. I was told of a young men who used parents for rituals to make money. So many cases like that abound and we felt not worried about the pathetic situation. There is complete break down in our educational system. Students don’t attend school regularly any more and when it comes to evaluation i.e. seating for public accredited exams the students hire teachers or foreign aids to write such exams and are scored with high grades
Don’t be surprise to see a student with several distinctions and credit in a result sheet who cannot write or read simple passage. What a big shame? That is the reason we now call for reformation of our educational system. The igbos have long seen this lacuna and encourage their children to acquire extra skills in professional trades. Alot of them now have several business outfit in every market in Nigeria
