The Kogi State Ministry of Health has commended Sightsavers for donating 480 white canes to the State Board for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

The donation was part of activities marking the 2026 World Sight Day on Thursday in Lokoja.

In his remarks, the Coordinating Commissioner for Health, Dr Adeiza Abdulazeez, commended Sightsavers for its sustained partnership with the state government in promoting eye health.

He said the gesture had helped in preventing avoidable blindness and improving access to healthcare for PWDs.

Dr. Abdulazeez reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to sustaining collaboration with Sightsavers.

He described the organization as a valued development partner in strengthening healthcare delivery and expanding access to essential eye care services.

As part of the World Sight Day activities, the Ministry’s Eye Care Programme in collaboration with the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria (OSN), Kogi Chapter, conducted an awareness tour across Lokoja metropolis.

The campaign, themed “Love Your Eyes,” sensitised residents on the importance of regular eye examinations and proper eye care.

Sightsavers donated the 480 white canes – assistive devices that help visually impaired persons navigate their surroundings safely and independently – to the Board for Persons with Disabilities.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr Maji Enoch, presented the canes on behalf of the commissioner.

Receiving the items, the Executive Secretary of the board, Mr Abulhakeem Yakubu, expressed appreciation to Sightsavers and the ministry for their continued support for PWDs.

Yakubu commended Gov. Ahmed Ododo for his support for the board and his administration’s commitment to addressing the needs of PWDs in the state.

He said the canes would be distributed to eligible beneficiaries during the 2026 White Cane Day celebration scheduled for Oct. 15.

According to him, the donation will help improve mobility, independence and quality of life of beneficiaries.

Yakubu reaffirmed the board’s commitment to promoting the welfare and inclusion of PWDs.

NAN reports that Sightsavers continues to work with partners to prevent avoidable sight loss and promote equal access to eye health services.

The ministry reiterated the importance of sustained partnerships in advancing inclusive healthcare, strengthening eye care services and reducing preventable blindness across the state.
