The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate alleged unexplained bank transfers to civil servants in Offa Local Government Area.
The party also gave the Offa Local Government Council Chairman, Hon. Suleiman Olatunji Omituntun, 48 hours to explain the transactions, which it said reportedly began on October 11, 2026, with affected workers receiving amounts ranging from N80,000 to N800,000 and above.
In a statement issued on Friday by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Olusola Adewara, the PDP said it had received reports that several local government employees were credited with the funds despite not applying for loans or formally requesting such payments.
According to the party, the affected workers were subsequently instructed to refund the money on the grounds that the transfers allegedly resulted from a technical error by a consultant.
The development, the party said, has raised questions about the source of the funds, the authorisation of the payments and the identity of the consultant allegedly involved.
The party also demanded clarifications on the account into which the workers were reportedly asked to return the money and the individual or institution controlling it.
“We cannot accept a situation in which civil servants are unexpectedly credited with unexplained sums and subsequently asked to return the money under the claim of a technical error, without a transparent account of what happened,” the statement said.
“If this was genuinely a mistake, the authorities should provide documentary evidence and follow a verifiable, lawful recovery process,” it added.
The PDP urged Omituntun to publicly explain the source and purpose of the payments, identify the consultant allegedly involved and clarify the basis for the reported refund instructions within 48 hours.
It warned that, if established, the circumstances surrounding the transactions could raise concerns about financial accountability and the management of public funds under the administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
The opposition party also advised affected workers to preserve their bank alerts, account statements, messages and any instructions relating to the alleged refunds.
It cautioned the workers against transferring the money to any account based solely on informal instructions, urging them to seek verifiable clarification from the relevant authorities and their banks before taking further action.
The PDP further called on the EFCC, ICPC, Nigeria Police Force and Department of State Services (DSS) to secure relevant financial records and investigate the transactions to determine whether they were legitimate payments, administrative errors or potentially fraudulent transfers.
The party expressed concern that the matter required urgent attention, particularly with political activities gathering momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
However, the allegations contained in the statement have not been independently verified, and the statement did not include a response from the Offa Local Government Chairman or the consultant allegedly involved.
