Kogi State House of Assembly has called on Kogi State government to urgently complete the construction of the long abandoned Oguma/Sheria bridge in Bassa Local Government Area.
Raising a motion of urgent importance in the House, the member representing Bassa state of constituency, Hon Ranyi Daniya said this was the second time he was raising the motion in the house for the completion of the Oguma/Sheria bridge.
Hon Daniya said he had on November 11, 2020 first raised a motion for the completion of the bridge in the house adding that uptill now the bridge remains uncompleted.
The Legislator also said matters came to worse when the heavy rain of August 11, 2022 overwhelmed River Yimuo and washed away the palliative wooden stead over Oguma/Sheria bridge.
Hon Daniya called on his colleagues to support him in calling on Kogi State government to urgently complete the construction of Oguma/Sheria bridge.
The Legislator said at the moment five wards to with parts of Akuba 1, Akakana/Ayede, Ozongulo, Ikende and Ozugbe wards are cut off from the Local Government headquarters, the state and the rest of the world.
Hon Daniya said the bridge has claimed many lives while goods worth millions of naira have been lost whenever River Yimuo overflows its banks. He added that the current situation of the people of his constituency is appalling and very disturbing.
Supporting the motion the assembly members representing Omala constituency, Hon Hillary Collins Musa and Hon Paul Enema of Dekina II constituency said the case of the washed off palliative Oguma/Sheria wooden bridge is very sympathetic. They acknowledged the importance of Sheria market in the economic development of the state and urged the state government to as a matter of urgent importance complete the construction of the bridge.
When the issue was put to vote by the Speaker of the House, Rt Hon Mathew Kolawale on the need to urge Kogi State government to complete the construction of the bridge, the House unanimously supported the bill for the state government to hasten the completion of the bridge.
It will be recalled that the Oguma/Sheria bridge collapsed on October 1, 2014 after a heavy down pour. Since the incident took place, successive administrations in the state have not paid good attention to the construction of the bridge
