The Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt Honourable Aliyu Umar Yusuf has inaugurated the Standing Committee on Information and Publicity.
Speaking while inaugurating the committee in Lokoja on Tuesday, the speaker promised the commitment of the state legislature to giving the ministry, departments and agencies under the committee the necessary legislative support to ensure improved productivity in the dissemination of information to all parts of the state.
The speaker used the occasion to applaud the competencies of staff of the ministry and its agencies, noting that it is made up of veterans who can hold their own wherever they find themselves in the media space.
He charged the staff of the ministry to ensure they take measures to curb fake news, character assassination through dissemination of falsehood as a result of the prevalence of improved technology and Social Media.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the standing committee, Prince Bode Ogunmola said the Assembly has a duty to pass laws that will serve the best interest of the state and importantly, the constituents, as it is their primary duty as Lawmakers and assured the ministry that the committee will remain guided.
Apart from being the mouthpiece of the House, he said the committee also has the oversight responsibilities over the information machineries of the state.
Prince Ogunmola noted their preparedness to work with the Ministry of Information and Communications and other relevant agencies, and assured the public that they will ensure that all state-owned media outfits perform optimally to ensure that the objectives for which they were established are realised as much as possible.
Responding Staff of the ministry and agencies expressed gratitude to the House and appealed to them to use their legislative powers to ensure they are given necessary tools to perform the duty of informing, education, enlightening and mobilising the citizens effectively.
